Mexico City is a city of miracles. The Indians who survived the
Spanish conquest experienced their first miracle with the manifestation
of the Virgin of Guadalupe, now the country's patron. Doubtless
the population tolerates the discomforts of urban life with such
stoic patience because the Virgin can be called upon in cases of
need. It is also something of a miracle that so much in this city
- one of the largest in the world - functions at all: the public
transportation system with its modern underground network, the telephone
system and food distribution all continue to cope despite the pressures
on them. Residents often organize themselves and overcome urban
problems which the city fathers cannot, or will not, do anything
about.
Despite the disadvantages, many Mexicans would not choose to live
anywhere else, and for the millions of visitors - seven or eight
million each year from the US alone - there are many beautiful and
interesting aspects of the city worth exploring: excavated Aztec
temples, baroque churches and palaces from the colonial period,
the sleepy districts of Coyoacán and San Angel, gloriously
spacious Chapultepec Park, the canals of Xochimilco and many wonderful
museums.
