Chronicle of a Generation

The second section of Edgar Reitz's 'film novel' focuses on a decade (1960 to 1970) in the life of a young classical musician and composer who moves from his small village to Munich. It is a sort-of sequel to HEIMAT #1, Reitz's 16-hour chronicle of the life in Germany from 1919 to 1982.

Although the second Heimat is not a direct continuation of the first HEIMAT, its lead character, Hermann Simon (portrayed by Henry Arnold), was featured in the original.
Both "HEIMATS" were shot like theatrical features. The second HEIMAT took a year and a half to shoot with a cast of 71 major and 310 minor speaking roles and 2,300 extras. Initially shown to record audiences on German TV. Milos Stehlik, director of Facets Video, likens its effect in Germany to that of the 1970's TV series "Roots" in America. Once people get hooked, like a novel, they can't put it down.

It has a solid dramatic structure, with characters moving in and out; but it doesn't go overboard like a soap opera.
